Yes, I suppose they could be refactored into some sort of defensive weaponry, if one were so inclined. Each unit's targeting sensors could potentially be rewired to detect movement or heat signatures within a specific radius. And it wouldn't be terribly hard to automate the firing mechanism to turn the whole thing into some sort of a sentry if need be. But that would be wildly irresponsible. This is a device used for science, not murder.<br />

Of course, if the whole unit were malfunctioning or the safety backups were fried in some sort of high-impact collision, that could also create a variety of dangerous scenarios. Can't imagine what a nightmare that would be to deal with. Good thing that'll probably never happen...<br />
